The notes on the guitar fretboard:

Below is a diagram of all the notes on the guitar fretboard.

As you can see, trying to memorize all these seems overwhelming. But there is an easy way to learn all these notes. The first thing to know is what note each of the open strings are. On the far left of the diagram are the notes for each of the strings when played open. This is a must to know these. The next thing to know is that the fretboard repeats itself at the 12th fret. As you will notice, the notes on the 12th fret are the same as the open strings. So now it is down to where you only have to know the first 12 frets. That is still a lot to memorize, so we will break it down even further.

How to Learn the notes on the guitar fretboard:

The easiest way to do this is to know the pattern of where the notes are. In this next diagram only the G notes are shown.

all G notes on guitar fretboard

If you learn this pattern you will be able to find any note on the guitar fretboard by only learning all the notes on the sixth string. The first thing you will notice is that the sixth and first string are the same. The second thing to notice is the notes on the sixth string are just two frets up on the fourth string. The same thing applies to the fifth string. The notes on the fifth string are two frets up on the third string. It is best to just pick one note to start with, like G for example, and play all the G notes on the guitar fretboard. It won't take very long and you will have this pattern memorized. Once you have this pattern down, pick another note on the sixth string and do the same thing. If you make this a part of your regular practice schedule it will become second nature. As long as you learn the notes on the sixth string you will be able to find that note anywhere on the guitar fretboard.

Even though you can get by without knowing all the notes on the guitar fretboard, it will limit how far you can take your guitar playing. If you practice this often, you will get to the point where you can name every note on the fretboard without thinking about it. This will take your guitar playing to a new level. You will be able to play chords in different positions on the neck, because you will know where the root notes are.

Knowing the notes on the guitar fretboard will also make it much easier to apply scales and lead patterns. The biggest problem guitar players have with learning lead is they will learn some scales and patterns, but when it comes time to use them in your guitar playing, they don't really know how to apply what they have learned. By knowing all the notes on the guitar fretboard, you will know where to use the different scales and patterns because you will know where the root note is on the fretboard for whatever key you are playing in. I hope this helps you out a little. It is well worth spending the time to learn the notes on the guitar fretboard, it will make everything you try to learn easier.
