Acoustic Guitar Playing:
If you are considering taking up acoustic guitar playing, I would tell you to definitely go for it. Learning to play guitar has been the most rewarding thing I've done in my life. Before you start it is best to get as much information as you can on acoustic guitar playing. This will save you a lot of time and money in the long run.

First Thing First:

Obviously the first thing you need to do is get a guitar. Buying your first guitar can be overwhelming because there are so many makes and models, and prices can range anywhere from $100 to $5,000 and up. While there is no need to spend $5,000 on your first guitar, you don't want to buy a real cheap guitar either. Beside the fact that a cheap guitar will not sound good, it will be a lot harder to learn on. It is easy to get discouraged on a cheap guitar and then end up quitting. I would suggest starting out in the $200 - $500 price range. This may seem like a lot to spend if you're not sure that you will stick with it, but as long as you take care of your guitar you will be able to get a good return on it if you sell it.
When picking out your first guitar, spend some time in the store. Even if you don't know how to play anything, you will want to sit down and hold any guitar you are considering buying. There are a lot of different shapes and sizes, so make sure you get one that is comfortable to you. Remember, you will be spending a lot of time with your guitar. When you have narrowed it down to a few choices that fit your budget and feel comfortable to hold, have a salesperson play each one for you a little so you can hear what each one sounds like. You'll be surprised how different one guitar can sound from another.

What to Know:
Whether you are going to try and teach yourself to play, or get some lessons(highly recommended) there are a few things you do need to learn about your guitar.

1. You have to learn how to tune it. Tuning by ear takes experience. Small electronic tuners are relatively inexpensive and are easy to use. Guitar strings get out of tune fairly easy, so you should tune your guitar every time you play. If you're out of tune it doesn't matter how good you play, it is going to sound bad.

2. You will need to learn how to change the guitar strings. They do wear out and lose their sound quality.

3. Know how to take care of your guitar. Being made out of wood, a guitar is affected by temperature and humidity. If you live in a cold climate where you heat your house, you will need a humidifier for you guitar. Guitar humidifiers are only a few dollars and they are a necessity. If the guitar dries out to much it will start to crack. The repairs can be very costly and sometimes they can't be repaired at all.
