Acoustic Guitar Basics

Acoustic Guitar Basics- What you should know:

If you are getting ready to start learning how to play guitar there are certain things you should know. Regardless of how you go about learning or what type of music you are going to be playing, there are common acoustic guitar basics.

You need to be aware of the fact that there are different types of acoustic guitars. The type you should use will be determined mostly by the type of music you are going to be playing.

The classical guitar: A classical acoustic guitar uses nylon guitar strings and a wider guitar neck than a folk guitar. It is usually played finger pick style.

The folk guitar: This is the most common and the type guitar you are probably used to seeing. There are various types of folk guitars with different shapes and sizes. As far as deciding what type of folk guitar you might want, this is pretty much a personal preference. The most important thing to consider is how comfortable the guitar is for you. Folk guitars use steel strings.

Acoustic Guitar Basics- The parts of a guitar

It is a good idea to learn the terms used for different parts of the guitar as you will run across these as you learn how to play.

Acoustic Guitar Basics- Strings:

Guitar strings come in different gauges (thicknesses). For a beginner I would recommend using a light gauge string. These will be easier to play and will not hurt your fingers as much. When you first start learning guitar your fingers are going to hurt. It takes a little while to build calluses on your finger tips. After you have been playing awhile you might want to experiment with different gauge strings. It is a personal preference thing as far as what sound your after and what feels best for you.

Acoustic Guitar Basics- What to learn first:

The first thing you need to be able to do with your guitar is know how to tune it. A guitar should be tuned every time you play it. Guitar strings do stretch as you play which puts them out of tune and since a guitar is made out of wood, it does expand and contract with humidity and temperature changes which also will put the strings out of tune. Using an electronic guitar tuner is the easiest way to tune a guitar, but it is useful to know how to tune a guitar to itself by ear. Electronic tuners are fairly inexpensive and you'll find they are well worth it.
