What To Watch Out For:

There are a few main reasons people give up on learning guitar, but if you are aware of these ahead of time, they will not be a problem when you encounter them. The first one is, your fingers will get blisters and they will be sore, but you will quickly develop calluses, and then you'll be fine. Another reason for people giving up is they get frustrated with their progress and then assume they are not cut out to play guitar. Believe me when I tell you, anybody can learn to play guitar. Really all you need is the desire. The best way to work through the frustration is once you have learned your first few chords you will want to find songs you would like to play with just those few chords in them. This is easy enough to do on the internet by just typing the name of the song and then the word tab after it. Check out my page called How to read guitar tabs. It is much more enjoyable to practice your chords by playing along with a song you like as opposed to just practicing the chords over and over. Many guitar programs have backing tracks included with them for you to jam along with. It really is the most enjoyable way to learn.

Practice:

Of course one of the best pieces of advice on the best way to learn guitar is "practice-practice-practice". The big thing here is not necessarily how much you practice but how you practice. Keep your sessions short but frequent. Set up a routine for your practice sessions, such as 10 minutes of warm-up exercises, 10 minutes of reviewing what you have learned already, and then 10 minutes of whatever new lesson you're on. See my page on How to play better guitar for advice on putting together a productive pratice routine.

Learning to play the guitar is one of the most rewarding things you'll do in your life. Make sure you keep it fun, don't get frustrated, it does take time but it is worth it.
